Material description
Material 1.1730 (C 45) is the most common unalloyed tool steel. For unalloyed steels, the carbon content (0.45% carbon) is crucial. The maximum working temperature is 200°C. Due to its good price-performance ratio, this steel is used for less stressed components and tools. Because of the price difference compared to alloyed tool steels, it should be carefully considered whether an unalloyed steel is sufficient for the application or whether an alloyed steel would be preferable. It is a universally applicable heat-treatable steel.
Heat treatment
Above a certain hardness, the brittleness decreases, so the steel must be tempered. The hardening temperature should be between 750° and 850°C. Afterwards, tempering should be carried out at 200° to 350°C.
