Material Description
Material 1.2510 (in Germany 1.2842) is the most widely used tool steel worldwide. Both materials are considered equivalent with regard to their properties. There are no differences in machining or dimensional changes after heat treatment. The hardenability-enhancing element manganese (Mn) in 1.2842 is compensated for in 1.2510 by an increased chromium (Cr) content. This is also demonstrated by the time-temperature graphs. Material 1.2510 contains tungsten as an additional carbide former
This is a positive aspect, however, as it results in higher wear and tempering resistance. Material 1.2842, which was developed from tungsten and chromium deficiency, is largely unknown abroad. With European standardization, material 1.2510 (01) will become the standard. Therefore, 1.2510 can be supplied as 1.2842, but not vice versa.
